Understand EPPP Test Content
If you have graduated, or are soon to graduate, from an accredited graduate program in psychology, you probably already understand most of the concepts covered by the EPPP test. You should still, of course, thoroughly review all the topics that are likely to be covered by the test. Be sure that you understand the key concepts in each domain. These include, for example; statistical concepts, main theorists, major theories, definitions of key terms, commonly known statistics about key topics (i.e., percent of people with common mental disorders), etc. You should be able to demonstrate your understanding of the concepts by answering practice exam questions correctly.
Memorize EPPP Exam Content
During the EPPP exam you must be able to recall the information you know. This means that you must memorize many of the topics covered by the exam. This is where many examinees get into difficulties. If you cannot recall the psychology topics covered by the exam you will not be able to answer the questions. You cannot demonstrate your knowledge of concepts if you cannot recall the information! This is just basic common sense.
Some people suggest that memorization of the topics covered by the test is not helpful. Their concerns generally seem to be based on a fear that examinees will memorize materials without taking the time to understand them first. It is important to understand, as well as be able to recall, key concepts and details when taking the EPPP test.
Learn Memorization Strategies
Memorization of so much psychology content, from such varied domains can be a daunting task. Topics to commit to memory range from statistical formulas to stages of common psychological theories.
Most of us get little formal trainning in school in how to memorize knowledge. When pressed to remember large amounts of material, such as when studying for the EPPP test, deficits in our memorization skills become apparent. We may have picked up a few strategies to improve our ability to memorize, such as making rhymes, or associating to funny images, but there are many more strategies. Improving your ability to memorize the material will make studying for the test easier and faster.
Unless you have been blessed with a photographic memory, I highly recommend that you purchase and study one of the many excellent book or audio programs available on memory improvement. These books and programs offer many strategies and techniques that can greatly improve your ability to memorize key concepts for the EPPP test.
The relatively short amount of time spent reading a book on improving your memory or listening to an audio program will save you countless hours of review for the EPPP exam. These programs can teach you many techniques to make your memorization of important content much easier.
All of us have certain items that just do not seem to stick to our memory. This is an area where memory techniques really shine. Identify the topics that you keep studying again and again, and yet keep forgetting. Then use one of the many memorization techniques to help you remember the material. This will enable you to recall the knowledge at the crucial moment during the EPPP exam.
Take a few moments now to explore some of the many books, audio programs, and software available to improve your memory at the Amazon EPPP Study Materials Store. You'll be glad you did.

Dear EPPP Study Guy,
ReplyDeleteI am interested in purchasing SuperMemo, but I have a Mac and it seems to be only for Windows. Can you direct me how to proceed?
Thanks,
Megan mkaden@gmail.com
Hi Megan,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your question. There are many Mac users out there and I hope my response is helpful to them too.
I recommend SuperMemo because of it's long development history and superior learning algorithm which improves retention and reduces learning time. Therefore, I believe that it is worth a bit of extra effort to try and use SuperMemo before searching for an alternate program.
There are several software based methods of running Windows Programs on a Mac machine. For examples see this article from Indiana University:

If you decide to emulate Windows on a Mac machine using software, in order to run SuperMemo, I recommend that you contact SuperMemo's support staff and ask them if the particular software you plan to use has been tried before with the current version of SuperMemo, and if so, if it has been successful. SuperMemo is frequently updated, so if SuperMemo support cannot assure you that the program will work ask if they will let you return SuperMemo for a refund if you can't run it on your Mac properly.
Good luck, and let us know how it works out for you!
