When To Begin Studying For The EPPP Exam: Part 3

Previous Article: When To Begin Studying For The EPPP Exam: Part 2

You Are One Of The Lucky Ones

Very, very few people will tell you about the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) early in your graduate school career. Even fewer will stress the importance of this last crucial hurdle on your journey to become a licensed psychologist. Perhaps other psychologists feel that you are too busy right now to worry about an examination that will not take place until after you graduate. Perhaps, like a trauma victim who has been through a painful stressor, they have blissfully blocked it out of their memory. Most psychology graduate students are only vaguely aware of this distant looming hurdle. Or they dismiss it, as being too far away to worry about right now. Nothing could be a bigger mistake.

But you may now count yourself among the lucky ones. You now know about the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. You know of its importance. You know that it is waiting for you, up ahead, lurking just around the corner. A corner that you one day, sooner than you think, will be turning.

You are, I realize, busy. You are busy with classwork, comprehensive exams, internships, a dissertation or research project. Maybe you are busy with an assistanceship; working on your professor's research project.

Your professors will not tell you about the examination either. If they do, they are not likely to stress its importance. Why? Well, for one thing, it does not affect them. It does not affect your classwork, your assistanceship, their research, or whether or not you graduate. It only affects you, my unlicensed friend. Long after you are no longer their responsibility.

Be An EPPP Exam Early Preparer

Become an early preparer. Study now for the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. You will avoid many of the costly aspects of the exam. You will have a better idea what to expect on the exam. You will be able to focus your study efforts now, while you are still in graduate school, on the topics that the test requires you to know, while the topics are fresh in your mind. You will have a road map to follow in determining which elective classes to enroll in. You will have a better understanding of which psychology topics are really important to know. You will be prepared for the psychology content areas required by the exam. You will be able to learn and practice the advanced test-taking strategies required to pass the exam. Many of these test-taking strategies will benefit you in your graduate school education as well. By being already prepared, you will be less stressed by the examination process. By starting early you will be able to collect study materials gradually, thus spreading out their costs. By being an early preparer you will be ready to take the exam at the earliest opportunity allowed by your local psychology board. This will greatly limit your downtime after graduation. As an early preparer you will be able to get licensed as a psychologist sooner, and truly get started in your career. This will allow you to earn a decent income sooner. Be wise, be an early preparer for the Examination For Professional Practice In Psychology (EPPP).

When To Begin Studying For The EPPP Exam: Part 2

Previous Article: When To Begin Studying For The EPPP Exam: Part 1

Cost Of EPPP Preparation Materials

35% of examinees fail the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (1). Knowing this, few examinees attempt the test without first preparing with one of the commercially available study programs. It's just not worth the wasted fees, time, and effort to attempt this test without thorough preparation.

Study materials for the test from the major commercially available study programs include books, flashcards, practice exams, lectures on audio CDs, workshops, and online materials. The total cost of these study materials ranges from around a hundred dollars to as much as $3000. The cost varies based on which materials you choose to include in the study package.

Several smaller publishers offer flashcards, books, practice exams, memorization software, flashcard software, and practice examination software. These study materials usually cost one hundred dollars or less. These less expensive materials offer a good option for those just starting out on their EPPP study journey, those who are supremely confident, and those who want to supplement more comprehensive study programs.

Cost Of EPPP Exam DownTime

There are many delays throughout the EPPP process. These delays include: Waiting for permission from your state or provincial psychology board to take the exam. Waiting for the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) to process your application to sit for the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. Waiting for a date to sit for the exam. Waiting for the ASPPB to report your score to your local psychology board. And finally, waiting for your local psychology board to confirm that you have passed (or failed), and to issue your psychology license if you have passed and met all their other requirements.

Cost Of Lost Wages From EPPP Process

When you are busy preparing for the test, there is one thing you are definitely not doing. You are not working. Many examinees take off from work completely to devote themselves to fulltime preparation. Some work parttime. Some work fulltime while trying to squeeze in examination preparation. Which, of course, even further delays their journey to psychology licensure. But the number one thing you are not doing, is working and furthering your career as a licensed psychologist. Lost wages and career opportunities are the most significant financial cost of preparing for the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology.

Cost Of Personal Angst From EPPP Exam

EPPP preparation time takes a toll on your psyche. Expensive study materials, exam fees, seemingly endless studying, waiting, lack of, or low income; while bills mount and graduate school loans clamor to be paid--all contribute to the stress.

During the preparation process most examinees question why the EPPP test exists. Some begin to doubt their decision to become a psychologist in the first place. A significant number of psychologists give up partway through the process and resign themselves to working in one of the few areas in psychology that do not require licensure; thus restricting their careers. Others sit for the exam, once, twice, thrice, and occasionally four times, before quitting the process. Defeated, they give up on clearing the final hurdle in the psychology licensure process.

However, most psychologists persist, and eventually pass the EPPP exam. But, no doubt about it, the process takes a substantial personal toll on your psyche.

True Cost Of EPPP Examination Summary

All of these preparation activities; time spent studying, exam fees, paying for study materials, downtime, lost wages, lost career opportunities, and personal angst add up to the true cost of the EPPP examination.

So, what can you do about it? Read on for the answer.

When To Begin Studying For The EPPP Exam: Part 1

When should I begin studying for the EPPP exam? If you are asking this question, chances are that you should begin studying for the EPPP exam, also known as the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology, right now. "Why now?" you ask. This series of articles answers that question.

Importance of EPPP Exam

The EPPP exam is the most important examination a psychologist ever sits for. Why is this? Because, even if you get admitted to a psychology doctoral program, pass all your classes, complete an internship, defend and publish a dissertation, and graduate from an accredited psychology doctoral program, you will be unable to practice as a licensed psychologist in any state in the United States and most provinces in Canada unless you pass this crucial examination. I know. It's hard to believe.

It's hard to believe that this test is even necessary, or the detrimental impact it will have on your career if you do not take and pass it. However, you will fast become a believer when, after graduating from a long and expensive graduate school education in psychology, you find that your friendly state or provincial psychology board insists you pass the EPPP exam or not be licensed. Or when you find that you are not allowed to practice independently. Or when you find that few employers will consider hiring you. The career impact of being unlicensed is substantial. Limited opportunities. Limited financial options. Limited career choices. Hence, for most psychologists, passing the EPPP exam is a necessity.

The True Cost Of The EPPP Exam

The real cost of the EPPP exam is not the cost of sitting for the exam; now nearly $600. Nor the additional costs you will incur if you fail the exam and need to retake it. Not an uncommon occurrence. In which case you will need to reapply and repay the full examination costs and fees. It's not unheard of for psychologists to have to take the EPPP examination three times or more before finally passing it.

No. The real cost of the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology is the study time, cost of preparation materials, waiting time, lost wages, and personal angst.

Cost Of Study Time For The EPPP Exam

You may be surprised to find that the EPPP exam is unlike any other exam you have taken during your graduate training. True, it is a multiple choice examination; but it possesses three characteristics that set it apart from ordinary multiple choice exams.

Firstly, is it's unusual length. It contains 225 questions. You must answer them within the allotted time of four hours and fifteen minutes.

Secondly, is the nature of the questions. The questions are designed to measure your ability to select between answers with extremely fine discriminations between them. In other words, there are hairline distinctions between the correct answer and the incorrect answers for each test item.

Twenty-five of the questions do not even count towards your score. These are experimental questions that the test maker, the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards, has inserted for study for possible inclusion in the next version of the test. They've volunteered you to test them out.

Thirdly, unlike exams that you studied for in your graduate school education which covered content one topic, or from one class, the questions on the EPPP exam cover eight different psychology content areas. They draw on knowledge from virtually all the major areas of your graduate school education. If your graduate school program did not emphasize a particular content area that is covered on the exam, be prepared to learn a new subject. Many examinees find that their graduate program did not emphasize sufficiently one or more of the content areas. Frequently mentioned content areas which require new or substantially enhanced learning include: psychodynamic psychology, industrial-organizational psychology, and statistics.

What this means is that you have a vast array of psychology material to master in fine detail, sophisticated test taking strategies to learn, and the need to hone your skills by doing a lot of practice exams. Your graduate school training, no matter how thorough, does not adequately prepare you to pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology.

All of which is another way of saying that a lot of preparation time is required to pass the EPPP examination. It's not unusual for examinees to spend months, and sometimes more than a year, preparing for the Examination For Professional Practice in Psychology.

How To Make Effective EPPP Flashcards Using SuperMemo

Previous Article: Memorize Flashcards With SuperMemo

Make Effective EPPP Flashcards With SuperMemo

In our last article at How To Pass The EPPP Exam Without Even Trying! we discussed the details of how SuperMemo makes it possible for you to remember 96% to 99% of your EPPP flashcards indefinitely, while only requiring you to review a small fraction of the total number of your flashcards each day.

Today we will present the basic steps for making effective flashcards with the SuperMemo program. The use of flashcards is a very important component of a study plan to pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. For the purposes of learning and retaining information for the long term it is important that only small bits of information be memorized at a time. It is easier for the brain to memorize or create memory traces of small bits of information. For example, it is easier to memorize just one word in a sentence, then to memorize the entire sentence.

For this reason, make your EPPP Flashcards in the form of incomplete sentences with only the most important word left out. This word is the keyword. The keyword is the most important part of the sentence that you want to remember.
Example 1
Freud is well known for his development of the theory of the id, ego, and superego.
In Example 1 Freud is the keyword that you wish to remember.

The Question And Answer Format

In SuperMemo flashcards are automatically created in the form of a Question flashcard and an Answer flashcard.
In Example 2 we see the basic format of SuperMemo flashcards. The Question is in the form of an incomplete sentence. Notice how we have replaced the keyword in the Question with ellipses (…). The Answer is the keyword (the part you want to remember).
Example 2
Question: … is well known for his development of the theory of the id, ego, and superego.
Answer: Freud

Memorize Only One Concept Per Flashcard

One of the reasons people have difficulty memorizing EPPP study materials is that they try to memorize too much material at once. By keeping the material you want to memorize simple, such as by only trying to memorize the keyword, your memorization progress will be faster and stronger. The keyword should be the main concept that you want to memorize.

How To Memorize Multiple Concepts

Now, suppose that you also want to memorize the keyword id. You would simply create another flashcard as in Example 3.
Example 3
Question: Freud is well known for his development of the theory of the … , ego, and superego.
Answer: id
So you see, for each keyword that you wish to remember it is best to create a new EPPP flashcard for that keyword. You may end up with many flashcards of the same sentence with different keywords removed. SuperMemo has a built in feature which enables you to type the original sentence only once, then each time you select a different keyword it automatically creates a new flashcard for you. This saves a lot of typing.

Summary Of EPPP Flashcard Format

In summary, EPPP flashcards should be entered in the form of incomplete sentences using the question and answer format. Nothing could be simpler! It's like passing the EPPP exam without even trying! The use of EPPP flashcards are a very important part of your EPPP study plan to pass the EPPP exam.

Our next article at How To Pass The EPPP Exam Without Even Trying! discusses how to create the actual EPPP flashcard using the SuperMemo program software.

Update: We now recommend the use of Anki instead of SuperMemo. Anki is a program which makes remembering  things easy. Because it's a lot more efficient than traditional study methods, you can either greatly decrease your time spent studying, or greatly increase the amount you learn. Anki offers free desktop versions, as well as the ability to study on your mobile devices! Study on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, and any device with a web browser.

Memorize EPPP Flashcards With SuperMemo

Previous Article: Review Of The SuperMemo Program For Making EPPP Flashcards

In our last article at How To Pass The EPPP Exam Without Even Trying! we discussed a simple solution to remembering the vast amount of content covered by the Examination for the Professional Practice of Psychology. The SuperMemo Program makes memorizing EPPP study materials in the form of flashcards easy.

How To Memorize EPPP Flashcards With SuperMemo

The SuperMemo Program makes it easy to create flashcards of your EPPP study materials. After you create your flashcards, then selected flashcards are presented to you each day for review.

The particular flashcards that you review each day are selected by SuperMemo's sophisticated learning algorithm. The algorithm calculates the exact day to present your EPPP study material to you in the form of a flashcard.

The algorithm is based on the science of learning using spaced repetition. The algorithm considers how difficult the material on each flashcard is for you personally. As you review your flashcards each day, the algorithm learns how well you remember each flashcard. It uses this information to decide when to present the flashcard to you again. As a psychologist, you are no doubt aware of the large body of psychological research that has confirmed the importance of spacing out your learning in order to be able to recall what you have learned.

Why Spaced Repetition is Important for EPPP Flashcards

The use of spaced repetition by the SuperMemo program for your EPPP exam flashcards provides three very powerful benefits.

First, spaced repetition has been shown by research to be the optimal learning strategy. Presenting small bits of information, in this case test content, at just the right moment optimizes recall. Using flashcards you can memorize EPPP exam content so easily, that it is like passing the EPPP without even trying! It is entirely possible using the SuperMemo program to easily recall 96% to 99% of your EPPP flashcards.

Secondly, by using spaced repetition you only review the particular flashcards that you are about to forget. No time is wasted reviewing flashcards that you already remember. The SuperMemo program automatically presents you each day with only the flashcards that are due for review.

What this means, is that although you may have hundreds or, over time, even thousands of EPPP flashcards, on any particular day you are only reviewing a very small percentage of them.

Each day the SuperMemo program presents you with only the EPPP flashcards that you need to review to maintain your desired recall rate. You select the recall rate you wish, such as to recall 97% of your EPPP flashcards. For example, you may have over 4,000 flashcards in your EPPP exam study collection, yet you may only need to review less than 65 flashcards a day to maintain 97% recall of your exam material indefinitely. As time passes, you need to review fewer and fewer flashcards to maintain your memory of the flashcards. This means that your studying becomes easier and easier over time.

Thirdly, because the SuperMemo program maintains your memory of your flashcards perfectly, no matter how long you study, you will never forget the EPPP exam materials that you learn! This is one of the most powerful benefits of the SuperMemo program. You need never fear that you will forget the EPPP study materials that you have spent so much time learning. This allows you to continue your EPPP exam studies until you are truly prepared to take the EPPP exam. You know that at the crucial moment when you sit for the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology you will remember the material.

In our next article at How To Pass The EPPP Exam Without Even Trying! we will learn how to make effective flashcards for the exam from your own EPPP study materials using the SuperMemo program.

Review Of The SuperMemo Program For Making EPPP Flashcards

Previous Article: How To Memorize EPPP Exam Materials

EPPP Study Using Flashcards with the SuperMemo Program

In the last article we discussed the importance of remembering the your EPPP study materials, and the difficulty of memorizing the vast amount of material covered by the EPPP exam. Today we will discuss a simple solution to learning and remembering the content of the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. We will review an indispensable study tool that no examinee should be without; the SuperMemo program .

The Solution to Forgetting EPPP Study Materials

Fortunately, there is a simple solution to the problem of forgetting EPPP test content after you study it. A powerful, but simple to use program called SuperMemo makes it easy to remember 96% to 99% of the material you study. The SuperMemo program has been in continuous development for over 20 years. It uses a sophisticated learning algorithm to teach you any material that you want to remember. This algorithm makes use of the research in the area of psychology of learning based on spaced repetition. The Supermemo program refreshes your memory at exactly the moment you are about to forget your EPPP study material. This enables you to remember the material indefinitely. It is done with a minimum of flashcard rehearsal. Unlike traditional flashcards, with the SuperMemo program you only rehearse the flashcards just before you are about to forget them. No effort is wasted on reviewing material that you already know. For example, you may have a collection of over 4000 EPPP flashcards. Yet, you may need to review only 65 flashcards a day to remember 97% of your flashcards. Sound too good to be true? It’s not. The performance of the SuperMemo program has been extensively researched.

Use SuperMemo With Your EPPP Study Materials

The SuperMemo program is ideally suited to be used in conjunction with your EPPP study materials. You simply select the content that you most want to remember from study guides, traditional flashcards, and practice exams, then create your own personalized series of EPPP flashcards. I suggest that you select the material that you find most difficult to rememember. The SuperMemo program handles it from there. It ensures that you remember the material perfectly. That’s all there is to it! Not only will you remember the information, but you will find that the concepts are easier to understand once you have perfect recall of the key terms that comprise it.

Try SuperMemo

You can try SuperMemo by clicking here. The program can be downloaded to your computer instantly. Within minutes you will be creating your own personalized flashcards of EPPP study materials. You can easily remember 96% to 99% of the content that you need to pass the EPPP. The program is available for instant download for the very modest price of $60. Isn’t passing the EPPP worth $60 to you?
There is no more powerful tool to help you in your quest to pass the exam. It’s like passing the EPPP without even trying!

In the next article on How To Pass The EPPP Exam Without Even Trying! we will discuss how to best use the SuperMemo program in conjunction with your Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology study materials.

How To Memorize EPPP Exam Study Materials

Previous Article: Review Of The PsychPrep Program For EPPP Study (Part 2)

In the previous article we discussed the last of the three most popular EPPP study programs. Passing the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology requires more than the purchase of a commercial study program, as we will see in today’s article on the how to pass the test. Today at How To Pass The EPPP Exam Without Even Trying! we will discuss how to memorize the psychology content you need to pass the exam.

To pass the exam you must memorize the theories, concepts, theorists, formulas, and key terms that you will be tested for. The key term here is memorize. You may have purchased the most comprehensive study program available, but if when you sit down to take the exam you cannot remember the material, you simply will not pass.

For most test candidates, the problem with passing the exam is not that they do not understand the material. After all, if you completed a PhD or PsyD program in psychology, completed an internship, and wrote a dissertation, you are probably already quite familiar with most of the content of the test. No, understanding EPPP content is not the problem that most examinees have. The problem that most examinees have is remembering the vast amount of material covered by the eight domains of the test until they sit for the exam.

The Problem of Forgetting EPPP Study Materials

Did you know that 80% of all information you learn is forgotten within just one month? And that 95% is forgotten in 60 days? You should. After all, there is a large body of research going back to the 1800’s on the psychology of learning and memory. Sadly, most of this research has been ignored by the academic community.

EPPP Forgetting Curve
Projected Forgetting Curve with Reminder Intervals

Graph from Wired Magazine article “Want to Remember Everything You'll Ever Learn? Surrender to This Algorithm”

This graph of the forgetting curve demonstrates how rapidly we forget what we learn, as well as how long we can retain that same information if we are reminded at appropriate intervals.

How Most Examinees Try To Memorize EPPP Exam Content

Most examinees use the same study technique to memorize EPPP exam content. They read through commercial EPPP exam study programs. They listen to recorded lectures on EPPP content. They attend workshops on the EPPP. They take EPPP practice exams. They make notes on the EPPP. They make paper or word processor flashcards, or use the flashcards provided by some of the commercial study programs.

All of these methods have one thing in common. They are very inefficient. They do not make use of what scientists have learned over the years about how memory works. They do not take advantage of the techniques discovered by researchers on how the learning process works.

The student soon finds that he has forgotten the original material that he started out with. So he goes back, and studies the same material all over again, using the same inefficient techniques. And so the cycle goes.

The Vast Amount Of Material On The EPPP Exam

Can you study and retain the vast amount of material you need to know for the EPPP long enough to pass the exam? Sadly, for many examinees, the answer is “No.” The Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology has a high failure rate. By the time you finish studying all the content domains, you’ve forgotten the initial material you studied. You then go back and restudy the same material you started with. Many examinees get caught up in an endless loop of restudying the same study material again and again.

There has to be a better way. Read on for the solution.

Review Of PsychPrep EPPP Study Materials (Part 1)

Previous Article: Review Of The Academic Review Program

In our last article at How To Pass The EPPP Exam Without Even Trying! we continued our discussion of the types of EPPP study materials available, and in particular, the use of commercially available EPPP test preparation materials. I discussed another popular commercially available EPPP study program, the Academic Review program (AR). Today, I continue our discussion of commercially available EPPP study materials by reviewing the PsychPrep program.

PsychPrep EPPP Study Materials

The PsychPrep EPPP program is somewhat newer than either The Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences program (AATBS), or the Academic Review program. PsychPrep has been around since the 1980's. The PsychPrep program, like the AATBS program, hails from California.

Similar to the other programs reviewed, the PsychPrep program is a very popular EPPP preparation program. The PsychPrep program offers four different packages of study materials, as well as the option to purchase individual preparation materials. The PsychPrep packages include some, or all, of the following: one comprehensive study volume of written psychology material covering all the domains on the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology, a 15 day live in person seminar on psychology content, 38 audio CDs or audio MP3's of live recordings of the lectures from the comprehensive seminar, PsychPrep's EPPP chapter quiz questions online (4 to 9 months access), two day weekend workshop on the test's content and test taking strategies, and lastly, a home version of the weekend workshop. Be aware that, like the AATBS program and the AR program, access to the PsychPrep online tests and online materials are time and frequency limited. That is, you may only use the practice exams, workshop questions, and quizzes a limited number of times within a specified time period. To get an idea of what the EPPP questions on the practice tests are like, you definitely want to visit the PsychPrep website where they offer access to free EPPP sample questions online.

The PsychPrep EPPP preparation program is unique in that all of the written materials for the test content are contained in one volume of text, not in multiple volumes as in other programs. The PsychPrep program has the reputation of being the most concise EPPP preparation program. It attempts to cover only the material that you need to learn to pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology, rather than an exhaustive review of the entire field of psychology. Many students have reported that using the PsychPrep study materials is easier, takes less time to complete, and is less anxiety provoking than the perhaps overly comprehensive study materials in the competing commercial test preparation programs.

Review of Academic Review EPPP Study Materials

Previous Article: Review of Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences Materials

Review of Academic Review EPPP Exam Program
In our last article at How To Pass The EPPP Exam Without Even Trying! we began discussing the types of EPPP study materials available, and in particular, the use of commercially available test preparation materials. I discussed one of the most popular commercially available EPPP study programs, which is available from The Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences (AATBS). Today, I will continue our discussion of commercially available materials by reviewing the Academic Review program.

The Academic Review program, are known as the AR program for short, or The East Coast Program, because the company is in New York. It is a very popular test preparation program.

The Academic Review program offers three packages of EPPP study materials which include some, or all, of the following: Six volumes of written psychology material, EPPP diagnostic test, seven online EPPP practice exams (time limited use), 17 audio CD lectures of psychology content, test strategies, flashcards, live seminars on EPPP content, online workshops, and consultations on the exam and preparation materials.

The Academic Review EPPP study materials have the reputation of being shorter, more to the point, and less overwhelming than the materials from The Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences. Yet, they are no less adequate in helping you prepare for the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. Like the AATBS, this review program provides very thorough preparation.

Visit the Academic Review website for the specifics of their EPPP study materials. Academic Review often has sales on its EPPP exam study materials. As of this writing they were offering $100 off of two of their programs, and $80 off of an online workshop. Go to the Academic Review website for package pricing and the current promotions. Especially recommended; check out the Academic Review website for a free sample exam!

We have no association with Academic Review. We are simply briefly describing their program, presenting our opinion, and the opinions that we have heard from psychology students and colleagues. The descriptions of the EPPP review programs discussed are not comprehensive and are subject to change at any time. Please check with the Academic Review website for the official details and specifics of their EPPP exam study program.

Next, at How To Pass The EPPP Exam Without Even Trying!, we will critique the PsychPrep program for passing the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology.

Review of The Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences EPPP Study Materials

Previous Article: Why You Need Commercial EPPP Study Materials To Pass The Exam

In our last article at How To Pass The EPPP Exam Without Even Trying! we discussed the importance of time in studying for the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology, the types of EPPP study materials available, and the use of commercially available EPPP test preparation materials. Today we will discuss the most popular commercially available preparation programs.

Three main companies comprise the most widely used test preparation materials for studying for the EPPP. These companies are:
  1. The Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences  (AATBS)
  2. Academic Review (AR)
  3. PsychPrep
The Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences

In today's article we will review the Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences program. The AATBS, as it is known for short, is a very popular source of EPPP study materials. It is also called The West Coast Program, as the company is located in California. The AATBS has the reputation of providing the most comprehensive EPPP study materials. Depending on the package you choose, the preparation materials include: Written psychology volumes, nine online practice exams (use is time limited), 17 audio CD summary lectures on the materials, exam strategies book, study tips audio lecture on CD, flashcards, online workshops (time limited), in-person workshops, telephone consultation regarding the exam, studying, and the preparation materials.

As you can see, comprehensive is the word of the day with the AATBS EPPP study materials. Some students find the amount of material to be overwhelming and anxiety producing. Other students question whether The Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences materials are a bit of overkill. But, without doubt, this company offers very solid programs for those examinees who prefer a very comprehensive approach to EPPP exam preparation.

Check the AATBS website for the specifics on the EPPP study materials they offer, and for current pricing. They frequently have sales on some of their materials. For example, as of this writing they are offering $100-$300 off of three of their programs. Check their website for the current specials, as they change frequently. If you do nothing else, at least be sure to go to the AATBS website to register for the free online EPPP study strategies workshop that they offer.

I have no association with The Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences. I am simply describing their EPPP preparation program, presenting my opinion, and the opinions that I have heard from psychology students and colleagues. Please check with the AATBS website for the official details and specifics of the EPPP exam preparation program reviewed. The descriptions of the EPPP review programs discussed are not comprehensive and the programs themselves frequently change or are updated.

In our next article we will discuss the Academic Review preparation program for the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. Remember to bookmark or favorite How To Pass The EPPP Exam Without Even Trying! and check back frequently for more tips and articles.

Why You Need Commercial EPPP Study Materials To Pass The Exam

Previous Article: Using Old Notes To Study For The EPPP Exam

To recap briefly, in the last article we explored using some of the materials you may already have available to pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. Today we will explore other options to prepare for this important examination.

The Matter Of Time In EPPP Study

One of the major considerations in preparing for the EPPP exam is the significant amount of time that it will take you to review and memorize the large amount of material covered by the eight domains of the examination. Examinees literally will spend months to years preparing for the exam. When one is spending this much time on preparation the quality and organization of the materials that one is using becomes an important factor.

While old notes, notebooks, textbooks, and the easy availability of information on the Internet appear to be a reasonable choice for preparation, this is not the case. The reason, simply put, is time. Time is money. Every day, every hour, every week, or month, or in some cases every year, that you spend preparing to pass the EPPP exam is time taken away from earning money in your chosen career as a psychologist. Gathering up old notes and textbooks, and searching the Internet is a very time consuming and inefficient manner of studying for the test.

When you use old college notes and the Internet exclusively to prepare for the EPPP exam you do not know if you are studying the material that is likely to be on the test. You do not know if you are focusing on the correct percentage of material from each of the different content domains represented on the exam.

In the case of using your notes and the Internet, you are not certain that the material is accurate, or that it represents the most commonly accepted interpretation of the topic. Perhaps your professor had an idiosyncratic interpretation of some of the topics. Perhaps the Internet article you accessed presented an unconventional viewpoint. Neither old notes, nor the Internet represent the best use of your EPPP study time.

Commercial EPPP Study Materials

Your time is valuable. Free preparation materials are not really free once you count in the cost of the additional time spent finding and weeding through them, time wasted reviewing the wrong materials, and time wasted reviewing inaccurate materials.

On the surface, commercially available preparation materials are expensive. There is no question about it. With prices ranging from $600 to $2200 many examinees believe that these materials are overpriced. Yet, if you take into account the amount of time you save by using commercially available preparation programs, study guides, and flashcards commercial materials are well worth the price.

Types of EPPP Study Materials

Study aids available may include some or all of: printed volumes covering the topics of the EPPP topic areas, study guides, flashcards, CDs of lectures and workshops, paper and pencil practice exams, online practice exams, in person lectures and workshops, and email, telephone, and in person consultations. The materials usually include tips on study techniques. The specific materials that you obtain depend on the particular “package” of materials that you purchase from the test preparation vendor. Another study aid, not available from the major test prep retailers, is the speed learning software SuperMemo. This program is based on extensive research in memory and learning. It ensures that you remember 95% or more of the material you learn!

In our next article, in How To Pass The EPPP Exam Without Even Trying! we will discuss the main retailers of commercial preparation materials, and review one of the popular test preparation programs. Until next time, keep studying!

Using Old Notes To Study For The EPPP Exam

Previous Article: The Three Pillars Of How To Pass The EPPP

EPPP Study

Today in How To Pass the EPPP Exam Without Even Trying! we will discuss Using Old Notes To Study For The EPPP Exam.

The first pillar of EPPP study is one of the most obvious strategies for passing the EPPP exam. You must be familiar with the concepts of each of the eight domains or content areas that the EPPP tests for.

As a quick recap, these are the eight domains:

  1. Biological bases of behavior
  2. Cognitive-affective bases of behavior
  3. Social and multi-cultural bases of behavior
  4. Growth and life-span development
  5. Assessment and diagnosis
  6. Treatment, intervention, and prevention
  7. Research methods and statistics
  8. Ethical, legal, and professional issues
EPPP Study Materials

You must be familiar with the material in each of these domains that is commonly tested for on the EPPP exam.

How do you do this? Well, you could gather up all of your psychology notes from graduate school, put all your textbooks in a pile next to you, and gather the content that you don't have by perusing the Internet.

Is this a good strategy? Well, on the positive side, at first glance it is free. Also, you may already have most of the content materials that you need.

What about the negative side? Well, I say that it appears to be free at first glance. But, it is not free. Here's why.

You must take the time to gather up all your notes and textbooks from your years in graduate school. Do you still have all these books and notebooks? Maybe. Can you find them all? Are they well organized? Legible? Are your notes complete?

Did your graduate program cover each of the domains fully? Many psychology graduate programs, while excellent programs, emphasize some of the eight domains covered on the EPPP exam more than others. You will need to fill in the blanks yourself. For example, some programs may give more weight to psychoanalytic theories, while other programs may give more weight to cognitive behavioral theories. Did your program cover industrial organizational psychology? If you are relying on your notes and textbooks I hope so, because it is on the EPPP exam.

Allocation of EPPP Study Time

Do you know how much time to devote to studying each particular domain on the EPPP? For example, do you know how much material tends to show up as questions on the EPPP exam for treatment of mental disorders? How about ethics? How much of the EPPP exam covers statistics? You must allocate your precious EPPP study time to the topics that frequently appear as questions on the test. There is too much material to study all of the material for each of the content areas. You would be an old, old man (or woman) before you could learn every concept in every domain that could possibly be on the EPPP exam.

Are your old notes and old textbooks up to date? Some material, no doubt, has changed since you began your graduate school psychology program. It is important that the EPPP study materials on which you are spending your important time studying is up to date and includes new material that may be included on the EPPP exam.

The material that is not contained in your textbooks or notebooks you could look up on the Internet. You would need to examine the source of the content to be sure that it comes from an authoritative source and is accurate. Using the Internet to get much of the study material you need for EPPP study would be time consuming, to say the least.

By now, you have probably drawn the conclusion that relying on your old notes, old textbooks, and the Internet for learning the content of the eight domains you must master for EPPP study is impractical. Notice though, that I did not say these sources do not have their place in preparing for the EPPP exam. Your notes, textbooks, and the Internet are all valuable resources for clarify the concepts that you need to learn (if you don't already know them) and review.

In my next article I will discuss more of what you need to know about The First Pillar of The Three Pillars Of How To Pass The EPPP in How to Pass the EPPP Exam Without Even Trying!

The Three Pillars Of How To Pass The EPPP Exam

Three Pillars of EPPP
Previous Article: Why You Need To Pass The EPPP Exam

There are three very important requirements to studying and passing the EPPP examination. These concepts may be thought of as the Three Pillars of How to Pass the EPPP Exam.

Pillar 1. Understand all of the concepts of the eight domains of knowledge covered by the EPPP. This is best accomplished through the use of commercial test preparation programs such as The Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences (AATBS), Academic Review (AR), Taylor Method, and PsychPrep. The EPPP Flashcard Secrets, and the
EPPP Secrets Study Guide are a good place to start.

Pillar 2. Memorize the theories, concepts, theorists, formulas, and key terms that are on the EPPP. This is best done using  flashcard software. Be sure to use a flashcard program that is driven by an advanced learning algorithm.

Pillar 3. Learn test taking strategies specifically targeted towards the EPPP. The test taking strategies  you learn should include techniques targeted to multiple choice exams such as: ruling out wrong answers, narrowing down choices, being aware of exception questions, exam pacing, and specific strategies for coping with lengthy exams populated with complex questions.

These concepts are discussed in greater detail throughout How to Pass the EPPP Exam Without Even Trying! Browse through this website to explore the many articles on how to implement these strategies. There is a lot of information here, so come back often.

Until we meet again remember to continue your EPPP study!

Why You Need To Pass The EPPP Exam

by The EPPP Study Guy

Why do you need to pass the EPPP exam? Why do you need a web site that teaches you how to pass the EPPP? Why can't you just walk in, take the EPPP exam, and pass the EPPP without preparing?

The Importance of the EPPP Exam

As a psychologist, the EPPP is one of the most important exams you will ever take.

You may have gotten all A's in your graduate psychology classes. You may have passed your comprehensive exams with flying colors. The professors may still speak in hushed whispers about the brilliant answers you gave during your dissertation defense. Your dissertation may have been published in the Journal of the American Psychological Association. And your internship director may have thought you hung the moon. But guess what?

Effect of Not Passing the EPPP

If you do not pass the Examination for the Practice of Professional Psychology (EPPP) you will not be allowed to practice as a licensed psychologist in the United States or Canada.* Not now. Not ever. Never.

No private patients. No insurance company reimbursement. No  “Licensed Psychologist” title on your business cards. Your employment prospects will be severely limited. You will not be able to partake of the full benefits of being a psychologist. In short, you will have wasted thousands of dollars on graduate school education and years of study and sacrifice.

What is the EPPP?

The EPPP is the examination that you must pass as part of the requirements to practice in the USA and almost all Provinces in Canada.

Creator of the EPPP

The EPPP was created by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards in the United States and Canada. The ASPPB is physically located in Montgomery, Alabama.

EPPP Content Areas

The EPPP exam consists of 225 multiple choice questions from eight content areas which are as follows:
  1. Biological bases of behavior
  2. Cognitive-affective bases of behavior
  3. Social and multicultural bases of behavior
  4. Growth and lifespan development
  5. Assessment and diagnosis
  6. Treatment, intervention, and prevention
  7. Research methods and statistics
  8. Ethical, legal, and professional issues

EPPP Exam Locations

The EPPP test is administered at local Pearson VUE testing centers on a computer. You only have four hours and fifteen minutes to complete 225 questions.

You may think that surely since you have passed through a graduate school program in psychology and been awarded a doctoral degree that you will be able to easily answer the questions on the EPPP. After all, you are familiar with the content areas. You did well in your classes and maybe even went to a highly competitive psychology program that was fully accredited by the American Psychological Association. You successfully wrote a dissertation or research project and even have experience in the field.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

EPPP Tricky Questions

These are some of the trickiest questions you will ever be tested on. Differences between the four answers to each question on the EPPP are extremely subtle. You must select the “best answer” not necessarily the correct answer on the EPPP. Questions and answers are frequently negatively worded on the EPPP.

You must know the particular content the eight domains usually focus on. You must both understand, and be able to apply, knowledge from each content area on the EPPP.

Why You Should Not Plan On Retaking The EPPP Examination

You may be thinking, “I'll take the EPPP exam without much preparation and if I don't pass I'll retake it until I do.” Think again.

EPPP Exam Registration Costs

Taking the EPPP exam is expensive. The current administrative fee from Pearson VUE testing centers to sit for the EPPP is $87.50. The cost from ASPPB to sit for the EPPP exam has increased to $600.

Before you can register to sit for the EPPP you must receive a Permission to Test letter from your state psychology board. State psychology boards charge you licensing and administration fees ranging from several hundred to over a thousand dollars as part of the process of obtaining permission to sit for the EPPP exam.

Limits On EPPP Testing Attempts

The ASPPB limits the number of times you may retake the EPPP exam. You may only take the EPPP exam up to four times per year. Most state psychology boards limit your ability to retake the EPPP exam even further. In some states after several failures on the EPPP exam you are required to explain to the state psychology board why you should be permitted to retake the EPPP exam. You may be asked to complete remedial work. The board of psychology may impose a waiting period on you before you can retest. At the least, you must wait the time that the EPPP reapplication and approval process consumes. It may be months before you are authorized to retake the EPPP exam again.

EPPP Retesting Fees

Each time you retake the EPPP exam, of course, you need to pay fees to the state psychology board, the Pearson VUE testing centers, and the ASPPB.

No—Passing the Examination for the Professional Practice in Psychology is no casual matter. And that is why this web site exists to help guide you through the process. With the proper knowledge, strategies, skills, and preparation you can and will pass the EPPP Exam.

Footnotes
*All U.S. states and Canadian provinces whose boards are members of ASPPB require applicants to pass the EPPP (except for Prince Edward Island and Quebec). Quebec requires out-of-province candidates to pass the EPPP.
